Global battery-making capacity is set to more than double by 2021 (in comparison to 2017), reaching 278 gigawatt-hours, up from about 103 gigawatt-hours in the second quarter, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The EV battery industry is still evolving and has not yet reached the levels of maturity of either consumer battery manufacture or the mainstream automotive industry.

In the case of automotive, the manufacture of electrodes, cells and modules/packs for large-format power batteries is still in its infancy. The battery manufacturing operation needs to become faster and less expensive if lithium-ion energy storage technology is to establish itself successfully in automotive.
